Summertime calls for cold treats, and ice cream is what New England does best! There are no lack of spots in the city to find a scoop, but these five are favorites among locals and visitors alike. Whether you like a cup, a cone, or a even an ice cream sandwich, you won’t be disappointed at these Boston ice cream stops.
655 Tremont Street, Boston 02116
Our all-time favorite place for an ice cream is FoMu! Wide open and welcoming, their Tremont Street location opened in 2016 and has plenty of seating. This location is the one closest to the Inn, but they’re continuously expanding, and now have a permanent home on Newbury Street as well. Their dairy-free ice cream happens to be vegan friendly, but even the most die-hard ice cream lovers will delighted! Our recommendations include the Bourbon Maple Walnut and Salted Caramel.

Yes, Blackbird is most well known for their doughnuts, but they offer soft serve ice cream as well. It comes in the three standard offerings chocolate, vanilla, and swirl. If you want to go all in, go for the doughnut ice cream sandwich! Ice cream sandwiches are made-to-order and you get to pick the flavor of doughnut and flavor of soft serve for a custom creation. Decadent, but worth it. Feel like venturing out of the South End? They also have a brand new location in Fenway, at 20 Kilmarnock Street.

We dream of Picco’s homemade rich and creamy ice cream, which comes in inventive flavors like Malt Brownie, Coconut Chip, Cherry Vanilla, and Sesame Swirl. With so many great choices, it’s difficult to select just one, but you can easily opt for “The Sampler” which lets you try 3 different flavors. If you’d prefer to sip your scoops we highly recommend The ‘Adult’ Ice Cream Soda which is a Raspberry Belgian Lambic poured over their classic vanilla ice cream. 4. Boston Burger Company
1100 Boylston Street, Boston
Want something really overboard? Then Boston Burger Company is the place for you! They're well known for their #FreakFrappes which are much more than your standard milkshake. Loaded with extravagant toppings, these concoctions are something you need to experience for yourself. Classics include flavors like Chocolate and Oreo, but we vote for going something more inventive like the "S'more Than You Can Handle” which is topped with giant marshmallows and a graham cracker rim. They also offer boozy frappes and a special monthly flavor.

5. Gracie's Ice Cream
22 Union Square, Somerville 02143
Taking a trip to Somerville? Gracie's in Union Square definitely warrants a stop. Since it opened in 2014, it’s quickly become a neighborhood favorite. They make their ice cream in small batches right in the shop so it's as fresh as can be. They offer a variety of 12 different flavors at a time, with one non-dairy option. They're constantly experiment and testing out new flavors to see which become fan favorites! In the past they've offered everything from Salty Whiskey, to Honey Cornbread, to Chai Chip.
