Holiday Activities in Boston

Posted by Inn at St. Botolph on Nov 16, 2016 2:39:35 PM

The city always feels magical during the holiday season! From viewing the twinkling lights lining the trees on Commonwealth Ave, to enjoying a seasonal show in the Theater District, there’s plenty to do in the city in the month of December and beyond. We’ve pulled together our recommendations for the best holiday activities in Boston below.

Ice Skating on the Frog Pond

One of our favorite activities in the winter is to lace up for a skate on the Frog Pond on the Boston Common! Renting a pair of skates and spending time on the ice is a wonderful way to pass a winter afternoon. The Frog Pond has skate rentals available as well as skating aids for children who are just learning, and is open 7 days a week, typically through mid-March (depending on the weather conditions).

The Nutcracker

The production of The Nutcracker is a universal holiday tradition, and we have several fantastic productions of the show here in Boston. Year after year, The Boston Ballet delivers a beautiful version of the ballet. Incredible costumes and vivid sets will enchant guests of all ages. We are also fans of The Urban Nutcracker, another spectacular version of the original. The production by Tony Williams Dance Center celebrates diversity through dance, and is a modern spin on the 19th century classic. The show mixes “classic ballet, urban tap, hip hop, swing, flamenco, step and jazz into something special” and this year it’s back for its 16th Season!

Freedom Trail Holiday Tour

One of the most popular tourist activities in Boston is the Freedom Trail, and holiday walking tours begin on Thursday, November 17th. For this special version of the tour, a guide dressed in Dickensian outfit, will take you along the route which highlights holiday lights and Christmas Trees, and includes a stop at the Omni Parker. The 90 minute tours kick off from Faneuil Hall and cost $29 per person. Reservations are required.

Boston Winter at City Hall Plaza

City Hall Plaza, a brick expanse outside of Boston’s City Hall, is transforming this winter! "Boston Winter" on the plaza will feature an outdoor skating path and European style holiday market. Visitors can enjoy shopping at 40 “chalets” with vendors like LovePop cards, Boston Olive Oil company, Etsy artists and more. Find respite from the cold in the “Urban Lodge,” a space modeled after a ski lodge where patrons can warm up with beer, hot chocolate, and more.

Enjoy the Lights on Commonwealth Ave

Commonwealth Avenue (typically referred to as "Comm Ave" by local Bostonians) is a street that runs through the heart of the city from the Boston Public Garden through Back Bay. During the holiday season, the trees lining both sides of the center pathway are lit with strings of lights, making for a stunning stroll. We recommend taking a winter walk down the street before stopping at a nearby restaurant, like Sorellina, for a cozy meal.

The Boston Pops

The Boston Holiday Pops is another classic holiday show that will delight music lovers. Conductor Keith Lockhart leads the orchestra in a performance filled with holiday music favorites, including a sing-along and even a visit from Santa Claus. You’ll feel extra merry after this seasonal concert at Symphony Hall! Special Kids Matinee Performances are also available.
